Robert Whyte Memorial Postgraduate Fellowship

In 1980, Dr Robert Whyte and Mrs Pauline Whyte generously pledged to establish, by

bequest, the “Robert Whyte Postgraduate Studentships” at the University to support research in

the fields of applied ecology in monsoonal and equatorial Asia. Annual funding for the

Studentships would be provided by a trust set up by Dr Whyte. Following the passing away of

Dr and Mrs Whyte, the Trustee informed the University in 1997 that the trust would be

terminated and that a lump-sum distribution would be made to the University based on the

designated portion of the trust’s assets. In 1998, the University received a sum of GBP228,975.88

(equivalent to HK$2,89M). No awards have ever been made and the balance of the donation

fund, as at July 2018, was HK$5.86M. In 2019, the name of the donation fund was revised to

“Robert Whyte Memorial Fund”. The awards shall commence in the academic year 2019-20 under

the following regulations:

Purpose and Scope

The Fellowship shall be awarded to full-time PhD student(s) with a research interest

related to applied ecology in monsoonal and equatorial Asia including but not limited to

studies in botany, zoology, biochemistry, physiology, and climatology.

3. The Fellowship shall be awarded to national or permanent resident of Hong Kong, Brunei,

Burma, Indonesia, Laos, Kampuchea, Malaysia, the People Republic of China, Philippines,

Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Priority shall be given to candidate who has obtained

his/her first degree at The University of Hong Kong.

4. The number of awards shall be determined by the School of Biological Sciences under an

annual budget currently set at HK$300,000. It is anticipated that at any given time there

will be one named fellow.

The Fellowship shall be awarded primarily on the basis of academic merit and research calibre.
